Outside of client work, I use personal projects to explore ideas that interest me. New interaction paradigms, creative AI applications and immersive learning experiences. These prototypes are where I experiment freely, take creative risks and teach myself things that later feed back into professional work.

Interior User Testing Walkthrough

2022 · Unity · Meta Quest 2 · Hand Tracking

I collaborated with an interior architecture student to help validate the redesign of a historic building in Gemeente Zevenaar, the former Vestersbos middle school. The challenge was giving the student and stakeholders a way to actually walk through and experience the proposed interior before anything was built. I built a VR application in Unity that allowed the design to be imported and explored in full scale on the Meta Quest 2.

The core of my contribution was designing and developing a new XR user interface system built around hand tracking. The interface lets users teleport between predefined hotspots throughout the space with minimal friction. No controllers required. The design philosophy was deliberate: keep the UI as invisible as possible, only surfacing what the user needs at the right moment so the architectural experience stays front and center.

My Contributions

  • Designed and developed a hand tracking-based XR UI system from scratch
  • Built a hotspot teleportation system for navigating the interior
  • Enabled import of the architecture student's design into the VR environment
  • Focused on minimal, non-intrusive UI to preserve the spatial experience

AI Photobooth

Late 2023 · Unity · Meta Quest 3 · Mixed Reality

AI Photobooth is a mixed reality prototype for the Meta Quest 3 that I released at the end of 2023. The concept: users sculpt a rough composition from basic primitive shapes in their physical room, then trigger an in-world instant camera to photograph their creation. The snapshot, along with the scene context, is sent to an AI image generation API, which returns a polaroid-style image rendered back into the mixed reality environment. It turns spatial creativity into a tangible, lo-fi artifact.

Beyond the playful concept, this project was a deliberate learning exercise: setting up and integrating AI image generation APIs, handling asynchronous calls within a real-time Unity application and exploring creative prototyping as a method. The result ended up as a shareable prototype that caught attention when I posted it online.

What I Learned

  • Integrating external AI image generation APIs into a Unity mixed reality app
  • Asynchronous API programming in a real-time XR context
  • Creative prototyping - turning an abstract idea into a working demo quickly
  • Building for Meta Quest 3 mixed reality passthrough

The concept

Build a shape. Shoot a polaroid. Watch AI turn your mixed reality sculpture into an image right in your room.

Animal Browser XR

Early 2025 · Unity · Meta Quest 3 · Mixed Reality

Animal Browser XR is a mixed reality learning prototype for the Meta Quest 3, developed at the start of 2025. Users can browse and discover animals that appear and come to life in their own room, combining the intimacy of your physical space with immersive 3D content. The experience is designed to feel natural and exploratory rather than menu-driven.

I designed and developed the entire UI system with hand tracking as the primary input. No controllers assumed. The interface prioritises direct manipulation and spatial clarity, letting users interact with content in a way that feels native to mixed reality rather than ported from a flat screen.

My Contributions

  • Full design and development of the application
  • Designed a hand tracking-first UI system built specifically for mixed reality
  • Created an immersive browsing experience for learning about animals in your own space
  • Explored spatial UI design principles without relying on flat-screen conventions
